Week 8: Roles of institutions for Sustainable Development
The Week 8 lecture of SCSH 1201 on the role of institutions in sustainable development was very insightful. It helped me understand how different institutions, from global to local levels, work together to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 16 (peace, justice, and strong institutions) and SDG 17 (partnerships for the goals).
One key takeaway was the importance of SDG 17, which focuses on partnerships. The lecture explained that countries, organizations, and communities need to collaborate across borders and sectors to meet the SDGs by 2030. For example, global institutions like the United Nations Sustainable Development Group (UNSDG) create policies and coordinate efforts in 162 countries. This showed me how teamwork on a global scale is essential for sustainable progress.
I was also impressed by how institutions operate at different levels—international, national, regional, and local. For instance, international bodies like the European Union set frameworks and agreements, while national governments, like Malaysia’s, create laws and plans, such as the Eleventh Malaysia Plan, to align with SDGs. Locally, institutions focus on specific issues like sustainable planning or waste management. This hierarchy made me realize that every level has a unique role, and my group’s Sustainable Development Project could target a local issue, like improving recycling at IIUM, to contribute to these goals.
The lecture also highlighted Malaysia’s efforts, such as the National SDG Roadmap and the SDG Progress Monitoring System (mysdg.dosm.gov.my). Learning that Malaysia has been pursuing SDG-like goals through its development plans even before 2016 was inspiring. It made me feel proud of my country’s commitment and motivated me to think about how our project can align with these national efforts.
However, challenges like funding, coordination, and localizing SDGs were also discussed. For example, local institutions often lack resources or struggle to prioritize SDGs over other agendas. This made me think about the importance of clear planning and community involvement in our project to ensure it is practical and impactful.
In conclusion, the lecture showed me how institutions at all levels are crucial for sustainable development. It inspired me to approach our group project with a focus on collaboration and local impact, while keeping global and national goals in mind. I feel more motivated to contribute to a sustainable future through small but meaningful actions.
