Week 4:International Framework of Sustainable Development
In Week 4, we discussed the key agreements, declarations, and frameworks of sustainable development, as well as the concept of Sejahtera and its role in local sustainable development.
Firstly we got introduce by the history of global conferences that helped shape strategies for sustainable development. It started in 1972 with the UN Conference on Human Development and continued until 2016 with the SDGs.
Next, we learned about the Rio de Janeiro Conference in 1992, which took place 20 years after Stockholm. The conference produced the Rio Declaration and Agenda 21 and led to two other conventions that were later signed by countries.
Then, we discussed the Kyoto Protocol in Japan, which started in December 1997 and became effective in February 2005. Its main focus was on reducing greenhouse gases.
The next conference was in Johannesburg, South Africa, where the main focus was on addressing global challenges like improving people's lives and conserving natural resources, with a special focus on oceans, coasts, and islands.
Lastly, we talked about the Bali United Nations Conference, which brought together 180 countries to take action on climate change.
After that, We got exposed by the definition and concept of Sejahtera. Sejahtera refers to a state of harmony, balance, and well-being in all aspects of life, including physical, mental, social, and environmental health. It promotes a sustainable and peaceful way of life where people, communities, and nations live in harmony, fairness, and respect for the environment.
Finally, Sejahtera is the local way of implementing sustainable development in Malaysia. This can be seen through policies like the Shared Prosperity Vision 2030 and the Five Wisdom of Falsafah Pendidikan Kebangsaan, as well as local initiatives like clinics.
In conclusion, sustainable development has been shaped by global conferences, and Sejahtera is Malaysia’s way of creating balance and well-being in life. It helps guide the country toward a more sustainable and peaceful future.
